A kangaroo was among the animals rescued during the recent devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Alfred in Brisbane, Australia. The storm brought heavy rains and flash flooding along the coast, after lingering off the northeast Australian state of Queensland for weeks. Peak rainfall totals over a 7-day period reached as high as 28-45 inches, as reported by Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology. Many areas were severely flooded, leading to numerous rescues and evacuations, with residents trapped across the region. One of the heartwarming rescues involved a kangaroo named “Skippy” who was found stuck in a flooded culvert in the town of Munruben just south of Brisbane. Three firefighters managed to save Skippy from the water and he was then handed over to animal carers to ensure his well-being. The rescued kangaroo was later pictured wrapped in a blanket and being cradled by one of his rescuers. In addition to Skippy, five dogs and their owners were also rescued from their flooded home, with the pups seen riding in a bright red and yellow inflatable boat to safety. The Queensland Fire Department commended the dogs for being perfect passengers and wagging their tails throughout the rescue operation. Fire crews also assisted humans whose vehicles were stranded in floodwaters, with drone footage capturing individuals sitting or standing on top of their partially submerged trucks as floodwaters rushed around them.
