Ukraine’s Zelenskiy A Good Chance to End War Now!

KYIV (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed optimism on Friday regarding the potential to bring an end to the conflict with Russia. Zelenskiy noted that Ukraine had accepted a U.S. proposal for a 30-day interim ceasefire, which could pave the way for peace negotiations. However, Moscow indicated that it would only agree to the ceasefire under certain conditions.

“We currently have a promising opportunity to swiftly resolve this conflict and establish peace. Our security coordination with European allies is strong,” Zelenskiy stated during a press conference. He emphasized the importance of achieving a ceasefire, describing it as the first crucial step towards ending the hostilities.

Zelenskiy called upon the United States and other allies to exert pressure on Russia, expressing his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin might prolong ceasefire talks to his advantage. “A robust response from the United States would prevent them from stalling. Russia will only hasten the process if faced with measures they fear,” Zelenskiy remarked.

Regarding the implementation of the ceasefire along the extensive frontline, Zelenskiy proposed utilizing U.S. satellite technology and intelligence to ensure compliance. Following a meeting between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia, where the ceasefire proposal was accepted, Washington resumed intelligence sharing and military assistance.

Zelenskiy also disclosed that talks at the meeting centered on the territorial dispute, acknowledging that resolving this issue would demand intricate negotiations. He highlighted that territory was the most challenging aspect post-ceasefire.

As the conflict enters its fourth year, Russian forces occupy a significant portion of Ukrainian territory, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region. Zelenskiy underscored that the ceasefire could facilitate the path to peace, with territorial disputes being a critical factor in ending the conflict.

Moscow’s demand for Kyiv to permanently relinquish territories, including Crimea and four other regions claimed by Russia, has been rejected by Ukraine. Zelenskiy shared ongoing discussions with allies regarding future security assurances and economic support, stressing the necessity for comprehensive air defense coverage as a deterrent in any peace agreement.
