Masked assailants, labeled as “instigators,” attacked the protesters’ tent camp with weapons and fireworks, with the chaos lasting for hours before police intervened. Over 200 people were arrested in the aftermath. The lawsuit criticized the lack of arrests of the attackers and highlighted the university’s stance against violence and discrimination. The incident added to tensions on college campuses during protests against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The attack was preceded by a Hamas assault in 2023, and the UCLA police chief involved in the incident has since left the department.
