Turning a Dull Porch into a Tranquil Oasis: The Transformation Story

The focal point of Sheila Bridge’s home in the Hudson Valley is her large enclosed porch, which holds multiple roles beyond just a typical entryway. This versatile space serves as a dining area, a workspace, a relaxation spot, and an entertainment venue. Sheila utilizes it for various activities, from hosting cocktail gatherings to unwinding with a good book.
Situated at the back of the house, the porch opens up to the outdoor world, providing a seamless connection to nature. With screens on three sides, it allows fresh air to flow in while keeping insects out. Sheila’s love for the outdoors is evident in her design choices, reflecting her upbringing filled with outdoor adventures.
The room boasts ample natural light and offers picturesque views of the sunset in the evenings. Sheila’s dog, Loki, also enjoys the freedom to roam inside and outside through a convenient dog door. The space is decorated with a mix of vintage pieces, artwork, and personal treasures, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Overall, Sheila’s transformation of her porch into a multifunctional oasis perfectly encapsulates her love for blending indoor comfort with outdoor charm.

The room features designs by Leon Talley and Angela Cummings, along with Bridges’s own collaboration with the brand. Since the space is not insulated, Bridges opts for outdoor-appropriate furniture. Guests can be found gathered around a Saarinen Tulip table, accompanied by custom rattan chairs in black, brown, and blue to echo the room’s palette. They dine on Wedgwood china of Bridges’s own design and utilize cutlery passed down from her parents. The lush green surroundings of maple, oak, and white birch trees create a cozy atmosphere, further enhanced by a green sofa and lanterns that bring the outdoors in. During the tranquil twilight hours, Bridges may relax with a nap, enjoy jazz music from hidden speakers, or simply sit back, observe, and soak in the rich, multi-layered world that surrounds her.
