President Donald Trump stated that he might soon travel to China to address ongoing trade and security issues between the two nations. Trump mentioned that he had been invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping and is considering the visit in the near future. Plans for a potential meeting between Trump and Xi have been discussed, possibly during Trump’s trip to Asia later this year. Another option could be a visit to Beijing on September 3 for a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, an event also attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin. This would be the first face-to-face meeting between Trump and Xi or Putin since Trump’s second term began. Trump also discussed his productive relationship with China and his efforts to strengthen ties with Pacific allies, such as the Philippines, amid maritime disputes with China. The U.S. sees China as a key global rival and has engaged in a trade war with tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump has set a deadline for reaching a trade agreement with China by August 12.
