Trump Urges Brazil Leave Bolsonaro Alone!

In a recent social media post, U.S. President Donald Trump came to the defense of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, whom he described as a victim of a “witch hunt.” Trump, who has used the same term to describe his own treatment by political opponents, expressed support for Bolsonaro, who is facing charges in Brazil for allegedly plotting a coup to prevent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from assuming office in January 2023.

Trump emphasized that the ultimate judgment should come from the voters of Brazil in the form of an election and urged others to “LEAVE BOLSONARO ALONE!” In response, Lula emphasized Brazil’s sovereignty and independence, stating that the country will not tolerate interference from external parties and that nobody is above the law, especially those who threaten freedom and the rule of law.

The exchange between Trump and Lula occurred during the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, which Trump criticized for promoting “anti-American policies” and hinted at imposing tariffs, sparking reactions from fellow members and partner nations. Bolsonaro welcomed Trump’s support, reiterating his belief that the case against him is driven by political persecution.

Brazil’s Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case against Bolsonaro and several others accused of plotting a coup to thwart Lula’s presidency. Bolsonaro denied leading any such attempt to overthrow the government but admitted to discussing strategies, including military deployment and suspension of civil liberties, to challenge the election results. Investigations into the election-denying movement, which led to riots in the capital after Lula’s inauguration, have been ongoing.
