Trump Threatens Panama Demands Canal Surrender

President-elect Donald Trump criticized Panama on Saturday, accusing the country of imposing excessive rates for the use of the Panama Canal. Trump stated that if Panama did not manage the canal in a satisfactory manner, he would demand that the U.S. ally relinquish control. In a post on Truth Social in the evening, Trump also expressed concerns about the possibility of the canal falling into what he referred to as the “wrong hands,” and specifically mentioned avoiding Chinese involvement in its management.

The post marks a rare instance of a U.S. leader suggesting the potential exertion of pressure on a sovereign nation to hand over control of territory. It reflects a possible shift in U.S. diplomatic approach under Trump, known for his confrontational style in dealing with allies and counterparts. The United States played a significant role in the construction and oversight of the canal and its surrounding areas for many years. However, full authority over the canal was transferred to Panama in 1999 following a period of joint administration.

In his Truth Social post, Trump criticized the fees imposed by Panama as “ridiculous,” highlighting the historical generosity shown by the U.S. towards the country. He emphasized that the U.S.’s actions were motivated by cooperation and should be reciprocated accordingly. Trump asserted that if Panama failed to adhere to the moral and legal principles underlying the U.S.’s gesture, he would demand the return of the Panama Canal without hesitation.

The Panamanian embassy in Washington did not provide an immediate response to Trump’s comments. However, the situation raises questions about the future of U.S.-Panama relations and the potential implications of Trump’s statements on bilateral cooperation.
