Trump Sets Sights on Panama, Greenland, Canada – What’s His Plan!

During the holiday season, President-elect Trump has made statements about acquiring the Panama Canal, proposing the purchase of Greenland from Denmark, and suggesting the possibility of Canada becoming the 51st state of the U.S. These remarks indicate Trump’s interest in expanding the country during his presidency, but the seriousness of his intentions remains uncertain. Some Republicans view Trump’s comments as provocative behavior, while others see a strategic move aimed at enhancing national security.

One former Trump campaign official highlighted the economic and financial influence of China in the Western Hemisphere as a key concern, especially regarding Panama. Trump criticized the management of the Panama Canal by Panama, citing high costs and implying unfair influence by countries like China, which has made significant investments in Panama’s infrastructure.

The discussion of acquiring Greenland is also seen through the lens of national security, particularly in the context of the Arctic region’s strategic importance in U.S. relations with Russia and China. Trump’s interest in Greenland’s resources and strategic position led to tensions with Danish officials, who rejected the idea of selling the self-governing territory.

Trump’s rhetoric about Canada, including proposing tariffs and criticizing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has sparked concerns and tensions between the two countries. Trump’s suggestions about Canada’s tax policies and political leadership have been met with criticism and unease among Canadians, including concerns about the implications for trade relations and international alliances.

Overall, Trump’s statements regarding the Panama Canal, Greenland, and Canada have raised questions about his administration’s foreign policy approach and its implications for U.S. global engagement and alliances.

It appears that Canadian officials are taking President Trump’s recent remarks quite seriously. Following Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau traveled to Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, to meet with Trump on his home turf. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also entered the fray, warning that Ontario could cut off energy supplies to the United States if severe tariffs were imposed on Canadian exports.

“We will go to the full extent depending on how far this goes. We will go to the extent of cutting off their energy, going down to Michigan, going down to New York State and over to Wisconsin,” Ford stated during a press conference after a virtual meeting with Trudeau, as reported by CBS News. “I don’t want this to happen, but my No. 1 job is to protect Ontario, Ontarians, and Canadians as a whole since we’re the largest province,” Ford emphasized.

The uncertainty among Canadian leaders regarding how to address Trump’s statements was highlighted by analyst Lebo. “You don’t know which of the strategies is right for dealing with a bully. Do you be nice and give them something that they want, or do you try and threaten them back?” Lebo questioned.

A recent Leger poll revealed that 13 percent of Canadians were open to the idea of joining the U.S., a figure comparable to the percentage of Ukrainians interested in becoming part of Russia, noted Lebo.

Democratic strategist Antjuan Seawright downplayed Trump’s focus on specific regions as a potential distraction tactic following the chaos surrounding government funding before the deadline last week. “It’s power and control and extremism,” Seawright remarked. “[It’s] Donald Trump trying to have unchecked power, controlling the narrative and the conversation.”

In response, Trump’s team suggested that global leaders are seeking out Trump due to his increasing influence on the world stage. “World leaders are flocking to the table because President Trump is already delivering on his promise to Make America Strong Again. When he officially takes office, foreign nations will think twice before ripping off our country, America will be respected again, and the whole world will be safer,” stated Trump-Vance transition spokesperson Anna Kelly.

Furthermore, Trump’s team highlighted Canada’s commitment to securing the border to prevent drug trafficking into the U.S. Additionally, they indicated that Trump aims to counter Chinese economic aggression by securing the Panama Canal and address Russian aggression by asserting control over Greenland.
