In a recent social media post on Truth Social, the president-elect mentioned that his son would be visiting Greenland along with other representatives to explore its stunning sights. He reiterated his interest in potentially incorporating the vast Arctic territory into the nation, stating that he believes the people of Greenland support his “Make America Great Again” initiative.
During a press conference, the president-elect hinted at the possibility of using military or economic tactics to gain control of Greenland and the Panama Canal. He emphasized the importance of these territories for economic security and hinted at imposing tariffs on Denmark if they opposed his acquisition plans.
CNN reached out to Greenlandic and Danish authorities for their response to the president-elect’s remarks. A Greenlandic member of Denmark’s parliament, Aaja Chemnitz, dismissed Trump’s comments, stating that Greenland does not align with his “MAGA” vision and that the majority of Greenlanders do not wish to become American citizens.
Prior to the press conference, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede emphasized that Greenland belongs to its people and their pursuit of independence. He highlighted the ongoing efforts towards independence and stressed the importance of not being swayed by external pressures.
Denmark’s foreign ministry acknowledged the visit but refrained from further comment, noting it was not an official American visit. The island’s permanent secretary for foreign affairs described the trip as private, primarily for shooting video footage for a podcast.
The president-elect has previously expressed a keen interest in acquiring Greenland for national security reasons. Despite initial rejection during his first term, he has revisited the idea, emphasizing its significance for global freedom and security.
The issue of Greenland’s potential sale was brought into the spotlight once again when US President Donald Trump revisited the topic in December. In response, Greenland’s foreign minister, Steen Lynge Egede, reiterated that the island was not for sale and would never be for sale. These sentiments were echoed by the office of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who has previously labeled the notion as “absurd.”
A member of Greenland’s parliament, Kuno Fencker of the Siumut Party, shared with CNN that President-elect Donald Trump and his eldest son would be warmly received in the autonomous Danish territory. Fencker expressed that the diversification of Greenland’s economy was crucial, making visitors like the Trumps and other members of the incoming US administration welcome both presently and potentially in official capacities in the future.
Fencker acknowledged the importance of the Pituffik Space Base, a US air base in North Greenland, for American, Canadian, and Greenlandic security interests. He emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the island and its allies in North America in the face of geopolitical realities.
Highlighting Greenland’s aspirations for sovereignty, Fencker emphasized that the decision on the country’s statehood and partnerships should reside with its people. He underscored the ongoing efforts to establish Greenland as a sovereign nation, emphasizing the need for self-determination in shaping its future relationships.
The interest in controlling Greenland is not a new development, as previous American leaders have also explored the idea. Notably, Thule Air Base, the northernmost US military installation located approximately 750 miles above the Arctic Circle, has long been a strategic asset. Past attempts by the United States to purchase Greenland date back to 1867, when Secretary of State William Seward expressed interest, and again in 1946.
In his recent New Year’s speech, Greenland’s Prime Minister emphasized the push for the territory’s independence from Denmark, advocating for the end of what he termed “the shackles of colonialism.” While this declaration was made without direct reference to the United States, it underscores Greenland’s aspirations for self-governance and autonomy.
As discussions surrounding Greenland’s status and strategic significance continue, the voices of its leaders and representatives reflect a commitment to charting a path towards independence and defining the territory’s place in the global landscape.
