Trump Gives New York More Time to End Manhattan Congestion Toll!

The Trump administration has extended the deadline for New York to terminate its new $9 congestion toll for most drivers entering Manhattan. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced on Thursday that the state will be given an additional 30 days while discussions continue regarding the administration’s demand. However, Duffy criticized New York officials for their refusal to comply with the deadline, as they have filed a lawsuit challenging the decision to rescind federal approval for the toll last month. In a strongly worded statement on social media, Duffy emphasized that the federal government’s financial support to New York is not unlimited and warned against continued noncompliance.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s office responded to Duffy’s announcement by affirming that the congestion toll will remain in place, referencing the traffic cameras used to implement the toll system. The toll, introduced on January 5, aims to reduce traffic congestion, generate revenue for the city’s transit system, and deter drivers from entering Manhattan. While similar toll programs exist in other cities globally, this is the first of its kind in the U.S.

Former President Trump, whose properties are within the congestion zone, has opposed the toll from the start. Duffy’s decision to revoke federal approval of the toll was based on the administration’s view that it negatively impacts working-class Americans and small business owners. Despite the administration’s stance, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, overseeing the toll, has maintained that the tolling program will proceed as planned, citing approvals granted under the previous administration.

Governor Hochul has met with President Trump in an attempt to address his opposition to the toll. State officials argue that the tolling plan has been effective, resulting in reduced traffic and improved commute times in Manhattan. The toll is projected to generate significant revenue for transit improvements, ensuring continued progress in the city. According to an MTA report, the toll program has led to positive outcomes, including less congestion and safer streets in Manhattan.
