Trey Smith Signs Record-Breaking 92M Deal with Chiefs!

According to reports, Trey Smith, the right guard for the Kansas City Chiefs, has agreed to a lucrative four-year, $92 million contract extension with the team. Following his first Pro Bowl selection in 2024, Smith has now become the highest-paid guard in NFL history, serving as a key protector for MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The new deal, disclosed by Adam Schefter on Tuesday, includes an impressive $70 million in guaranteed money. Schefter noted that Smith is now receiving the highest annual salary and guaranteed money for a guard position in the league.

The Chiefs managed to secure Smith’s services just hours before the 4 p.m. ET franchise tag deadline. Had they missed the deadline, Smith would have been limited to a one-year deal in 2025. The franchise tag placed on Smith earlier in the offseason was non-exclusive, enabling him to negotiate with other teams and sign offer sheets, with the Chiefs retaining the right to match any offer. Fortunately for the Chiefs, no such scenario unfolded.

Despite the negotiations for a long-term contract extending past the offseason, Smith showed commitment by reporting for the team’s mandatory minicamp in June, earning praise from teammate and All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, who had his own contract dispute with the organization in 2023.

Jones humorously reflected on his own situation, jokingly praising Smith for not taking his approach and opting for the substantial franchise tag value instead. Jones missed significant time before agreeing to a new one-year deal worth up to $25 million.

Smith, originally drafted in the sixth round in 2021, signed a four-year contract worth $3.61 million as a rookie. Since then, he has been a consistent starter for the Chiefs, with notable accomplishments including two Super Bowl rings and a Pro Bowl selection in 2024. Pro Football Focus recognized Smith for allowing just one sack during his Pro Bowl season.

Before his NFL career, Smith had a successful college career at Tennessee, earning All-SEC honors multiple times.
