Kansas City Chiefs’ standout tight end Travis Kelce commemorated his remarkable touchdown reception in the previous week’s clash against the Pittsburgh Steelers by paying tribute to the iconic Tony Gonzalez. Mimicking Gonzalez’s signature move, Kelce performed a celebratory dunk of the football through the goalposts, reminiscent of Gonzalez’s illustrious career with both the Chiefs and the Atlanta Falcons. This particular score marked Kelce’s 77th career touchdown, surpassing Gonzalez on the all-time list.
However, the exuberant celebration came at a cost, impacting Kelce financially rather than emotionally. Reports indicate that Kelce incurred a $14,069 fine for “Unsportsmanlike Conduct Use of Prop.” Fortunately, it seemed that Gonzalez was aware of the impending penalty as he humorously responded, “lol! I got u,” while also praising the dunk.
Kelce’s performance this season has veered from the norm for Chiefs enthusiasts. Initially starting off sluggishly, he failed to secure his first touchdown catch of the season until the encounter with the Las Vegas Raiders on October 27. To date, Kelce has amassed 97 receptions for 823 yards and three touchdowns in the current season. Notably, his receiving yards stand at their lowest since the 2014 season, his second year in the league, while his touchdown count represents a career low, having notched four touchdown receptions in 2016.
Despite his statistical dip this season, Kelce’s popularity among fans earned him a selection to the Pro Bowl, marking the tenth such recognition in his career. The Chiefs are set to conclude the regular season with a matchup against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, followed by a bye week in the opening round of the playoffs.
