BERLIN (AP) — A 2-year-old girl and her mother tragically passed away two days after sustaining injuries in a shocking car-ramming assault at a labor union demonstration in Munich, as confirmed by the police on Saturday. Following the incident on Thursday, a 24-year-old Afghan man, who had sought asylum in Germany, was promptly apprehended. Authorities revealed on Friday that the perpetrator seemed to be driven by an Islamic extremist motive, although no concrete proof linked him to any radical network.
The ruthless attack resulted in injuries to a total of thirty-nine individuals, with two of them reported to be in critical condition, according to police updates on Friday. Subsequently, the Bavaria state criminal police office announced on Saturday, as per the German news agency dpa, that the young girl and her mother, a 37-year-old resident of Munich, succumbed to their wounds.
This tragic event marks the fifth incident involving immigrants in the past nine months, bringing the contentious issue of migration to the forefront of Germany’s upcoming election campaign scheduled for Feb. 23. Chancellor Olaf Scholz paid a visit to the site of the attack on Saturday, offering his respects by placing a white rose at an impromptu memorial.
