*****Senate’s Top Republican Predicts Senate Tariff Bill Won’t Advance*****
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Senate Majority Whip John Thune, the highest-ranking Republican in the Senate, expressed doubt on Monday about the future of a bipartisan bill that seeks to mandate congressional approval for new tariffs. Thune informed reporters that he believes the bill, introduced by Democrat Maria Cantwell of Washington and Republican Chuck Grassley of Iowa in response to President Donald Trump’s recent tariff announcements, is unlikely to progress further. “I don’t think that has a future,” stated Thune, who hails from South Dakota. “The president has indicated he would veto it. I don’t see how they get it on the floor in the House. We are going to wait and see what is going to happen next.” Grassley, alongside six other Republican senators, has endorsed the bill as co-sponsors. (Reporting by Bo Erickson; Editing by Scott Malone)
