Top Grocery Store Crescent Roll!

Crescent rolls are akin to tortilla chips at a Mexican restaurant: You intend to save room for the main course, but those plans quickly change when a basket of warm, golden dinner rolls is placed before you. Ready-to-bake rolls are not only a hit with crowds, but they also come to the rescue with their minimal preparation and quick baking time. After sampling five different brands of crescent rolls, three emerged as clear favorites.

To determine the best among them, we conducted a blind taste test using five popular brands found in the refrigerated section of grocery stores. Each roll was baked according to package instructions, which typically called for a baking temperature of 375°F (or 350°F for nonstick pans) for around 10 to 13 minutes.

Our evaluation criteria focused on flavor and texture. Testers assessed the rolls for butteriness, sweetness, and saltiness in terms of flavor, while considering flakiness, airiness, and overall tenderness for texture. To maintain fairness, no additional butter was brushed on the rolls before baking, and they were served plain.

Out of the five brands tested, two fared poorly in both flavor and texture, being described as bland and “claggy.” However, the top three rolls left a lasting impression and are recommended for your holiday table.

Trader Joe’s took the top spot with their Organic Crescent Rolls, offering a balanced flavor with a hint of sweetness and nutty undertones. These rolls boasted a wonderful texture, with crisp exteriors and airy layers, making them a perfect pairing for heavier dishes like prime rib or stew.

Pillsbury Original Crescent Rolls claimed the title of best classic, known for their flaky yet pillowy texture and well-seasoned taste. These rolls also impressed with their appealing golden brown color and can be elevated with a simple compound butter.

Lastly, Publix Original Crescent Rolls received an honorable mention for surprising testers with their sweeter profile reminiscent of brioche. Their springy texture was a hit, particularly for those in the South or Southeast seeking a slightly sweeter option.

In conclusion, these top three crescent roll brands are sure to elevate your dining experience and are worthy additions to your holiday gatherings.
