Filmmaker Tim Burton, known for his love of dogs, is the subject of a new documentary series that delves into his affection for pets. In the untitled four-part documentary by Tara Wood, Burton’s collaborators discuss his photography series featuring his late Chihuahua Poppy, whom he shared with ex-partner Lisa Marie. The documentary reveals how dogs have consistently appeared in Burton’s creative projects over the years.
Burton’s relationship with Marie, who appeared in several of his films, including Ed Wood and Mars Attacks!, ended in 2001. He then started dating Helena Bonham Carter, with whom he shares two children. Bonham Carter notes Burton’s deep connection with dogs, citing his childhood pet Pepper and his comfort around dogs. She describes Burton as being like a dog himself, emphasizing his visual communication style and his ability to relate to canines.
The documentary also explores how Burton’s 2012 movie Frankenweenie was inspired by his personal experiences with dogs. The film, based on a childhood memory, allowed Burton to incorporate various personal elements into the story.
Wood’s documentary, which premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, features interviews with Burton’s colleagues such as Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Danny Elfman. Distribution for the series is currently being sought.
