Episode Overview: In this episode, learn how to maintain the appearance of apple trees and discover Grumpy’s featured plant of the week.
Listener Question: A listener from North Carolina is concerned about the declining state of their apple trees as the seasons progress. Despite still bearing fruit, the trees lose their leaves and look unsightly. While the listener’s spouse suggests cutting them down, the listener seeks to save them. They inquire about a spray that is safe for the nearby creek.
Grumpy’s Advice: Various fungal diseases can impact apple trees’ foliage and fruit. To prevent these issues, consider planting disease-resistant varieties like Freedom, Liberty, Priscilla, and Redfree. For existing trees, Grumpy recommends using neem oil every 10 to 14 days post-blooming following label instructions. Avoid spraying during blooming as neem oil can harm bees. Neem oil serves as a natural fungicide effective against apple scab, rust, and powdery mildew. Additionally, applying dormant oil in winter and promptly removing rotten fruit can help. Be cautious not to spray near water sources to protect fish from pesticide exposure.
Plant Spotlight: Grumpy introduces Solarscape Pink Jewel Impatiens as the Plant of the Week, a 2024 All American Selections winner. This sun-loving variety features large magenta pink blossoms atop disease-resistant foliage, suitable for both full sun and part sun conditions. With self-cleaning faded flowers, this plant is low-maintenance and ideal for borders or containers.
