The Mysterious Relationship Between Iconic Symbols and the Secret Connection of a Legendary Venue

This interview with Dana Taylor, the host of The Excerpt podcast, has been edited for brevity and clarity.

Question: The enduring tale of the Apollo Theater is one of perseverance. How do you believe it has managed to retain its relevance after 90 years?

Dionne Warwick: Oh, my goodness. The Apollo is a structure that will endure not only throughout our lifetimes but through the generations to come long after we are gone. The age-old saying holds true: If you can succeed at the Apollo, you can succeed anywhere.

Amateur Night is renowned for a reason. What was your first experience like stepping onto that iconic stage?

It was truly daunting. Standing where the legends of our industry not only stood but also performed is a deeply humbling experience. To stand there and perform, you feel as though you have accomplished something significant.

The audience actively participates in unearthing extraordinary talent. Could you elaborate on that?

They are undeniably one of the most demanding crowds to entertain and to earn approval from.

One of the most iconic winners of Amateur Night was a 17-year-old Ella Fitzgerald. How did the artists who came before you influence your own career?

It is often said that we stand on the shoulders of giants, and I was fortunate to do just that. I had the privilege of getting to know these remarkable individuals in the industry. They welcomed me with open arms, mentored me, and guided me along my journey. They provided invaluable advice when they felt it was necessary.

What insights can you offer about the environment cultivated at the Apollo for emerging artists?

Success is not handed to you; it is earned. This is something I truly appreciate about the Apollo audience. They compel you to bring your absolute best to the stage. This is crucial for newcomers who may believe they have it all figured out until the audience enlightens them otherwise. Sometimes, a reality check is necessary.

Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring artists who aspire to receive the same reception you did at the Apollo?

All I can say is that you must refine your craft. Ensure that it meets the standards you have set for yourself. Once you reach that level, forge ahead.

You are still actively touring. There is a well-known quote of yours where you mentioned that the word ‘rest’ is simply another unpleasant four-letter word. What motivates you to keep going?

While it is important to get sufficient rest, it does not feel like the right time for me to simply stop and relax and forego the activities I cherish.

Is there a particular song of yours that encapsulates your vocal artistry perfectly, or that you particularly enjoy performing?

Whenever I am asked this question, my response remains the same: Each and every song is my favorite.

Returning to the Apollo Theater, could you share some of your memories of performing there or even of being in the audience?
