Shōgun depicts the power struggle among rival regents in feudal Japan in 1600, offering a unique perspective on James Clavell’s popular novel through a distinctly Japanese lens. Developed by Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, and helmed by leading actor and icon Hiroyuki Sanada, the series is rich in historical context, tradition, and meticulous research. Following its tenth episode on April 23, 2024, the historical drama concluded its first season on an uncertain note. Originally billed as a limited series prior to its premiere in February 2024, there is now speculation about the future of the show given its considerable success. Here is what we currently know about the next steps for Shōgun:

Has Shōgun been approved for a second season?
Yes, the series has been renewed for two additional seasons. FX, Hulu, and the Estate of James Clavell have joined forces to extend the series beyond its initial limited run, as announced on May 16, 2024. Co-creators and executive producers Marks and Kondo, executive producer Michaela Clavell (daughter of James Clavell), and star/producer Sanada are all set to return. While production dates are yet to be finalized, a writing team is being assembled and is expected to commence work this summer, according to the official statement.

Shortly before the renewal announcement, Sanada secured a deal to reprise his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, reported by Deadline on May 10. His involvement was crucial for the show’s progression. Further details and agreements are still in progress as FX aims to bring Shōgun to a second season following the commercial and critical triumph of the limited series.

Reflecting on the finale, Sanada shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “We have been discussing the possibility of continuing the story since we began filming, but nothing is certain.” Marks added, “If we find a compelling story, we would consider continuing. However, it is essential to have a clear direction before proceeding. Planning is key.”

Marks previously confirmed to THR that the tenth episode serves as a definitive conclusion for the series, mirroring the closure in Clavell’s novel. He stated, “We followed the book until the end, concluding it in a satisfying manner. We are proud of how it all came together.”

Considering the extensive effort invested in developing the first season, Marks emphasized the meticulous planning and dedication required throughout the five-year process. He highlighted the intricate details and shared that a producer had compiled an extensive manual for the production.

Although the future beyond the first season remains uncertain, the team acknowledges the need for reflection and recovery before making decisions about the show’s direction. Executive producer Michaela Clavell also expressed the complexity of moving forward without a clear roadmap. The team remains proud of the journey thus far and is cautious about potential future developments.”

Noble Clavell, daughter of renowned author James Clavell, appeared to offer a more optimistic perspective. In an interview with The Direct, she remarked, “You know, the audience will let us know whether…there is their appetite for that. We shall see. It’s a great question. I wish I knew the complete answer, but I don’t.”

What could the second season entail? The conclusion of the first season sets the stage for Lord Toranaga to ascend as shogun, thanks to Mariko’s selfless act, the true “crimson sky.” A glimpse into the future, one month ahead, reveals Toranaga poised to confront Ishido and the other regents on the battlefield at Sekigahara. Yet, Lady Ochiba has clandestinely promised to prevent the heir’s army from engaging in combat. This move would leave Ishido without a standard to rally under, prompting the regents to pivot against him, thereby securing Toranaga’s triumph. Might the upcoming season delve into this pivotal clash, or look beyond to when Toranaga assumes the shogunate?

Forbes points out that Clavell authored a total of six works in his “Asian Saga.” Apart from “Shōgun,” the remaining five books unfold across varied epochs in Japan, Hong Kong, and Iran. Should the creators opt for spinoffs, these narratives could serve as a wellspring of inspiration.

Is production for season 2 underway? Not as yet. In August 2024, The Hollywood Reporter inquired with Sanada regarding “future seasons.” Sanada disclosed, “We have a writers room, and they’re working every day. Hopefully sometime [in 2025], we can start shooting.”
