Texas Measles Outbreak Soars to 702 Cases Statewide!

According to a report by the Texas health department on Tuesday, there have been 702 cases of measles in the state, marking an increase of 19 cases since May 2. This surge in cases is part of a larger outbreak of measles in the U.S., with a total of 935 confirmed cases reported by 30 jurisdictions as of May 1. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported 12 outbreaks so far this year, sparking concerns among researchers that the country may be on the brink of a resurgence of endemic measles, 25 years after its eradication. The epicenter of the outbreak is Gaines County, where cases have risen from 396 to 403, as per the latest update from the Texas Department of State Health Services. In neighboring New Mexico, the health department has reported 67 cases, mainly concentrated in Lea County, which borders Gaines County in Texas.
