In a similar vein, others are embracing AI coding agents to simplify tasks that previously demanded experienced engineers to spend hours deciphering code or beginners to navigate steep learning curves. “For a beginner exploring coding concepts, it’s immensely satisfying to create a functional product within an hour,” Harry Law, an AI researcher at the University of Cambridge, shared with Business Insider.

Amjad Masad, CEO of Replit, noted that “75% of Replit customers never write a single line of code.” This underlines the current trend in vibe coding, where users can initiate projects without direct code input. Replit offers an online integrated development environment and aims to integrate AI to facilitate app development through simple prompts.

Recognizing the potential of vibe coding, startup Menlo Park Labs, spearheaded by Misbah Syed, champions this approach. Syed applies vibe coding in products like Brain Docs, streamlining PDF to explainer video conversions. He emphasizes that vibe coding accelerates product development, making ideas quickly materialize.

Despite its advantages, experts caution about the risks associated with vibe coding. Law warns that while beginners may progress rapidly, they might miss out on learning crucial elements like system architecture and performance. Overreliance on AI could lead to technical debts and security vulnerabilities, necessitating proper code review.

A senior software engineer at Microsoft, speaking anonymously, believes vibe coding may be overhyped. Large language models, while effective for individual tasks, could struggle with project maintenance and expansion, generating irrelevant content. Venture capitalist Andrew Chen also expressed frustration with the limitations of AI codegen tools in the iterative development process.

On February 7, 2025, Karpathy recognized certain constraints in his initial post, highlighting that occasionally, an AI model may encounter a situation where it is unable to rectify a bug. Nonetheless, he has observed that by either finding ways to circumvent the issue or requesting arbitrary alterations, the errors can eventually be resolved.
