By Stephen Nellis (Reuters) – Cerebras Systems, an artificial intelligence chip firm supported by UAE technology conglomerate G42, announced on Thursday a groundbreaking partnership with France’s Mistral that has resulted in a speed record achievement for the European AI company.
Mistral, known for its open-source AI technology, aims to disrupt the market dominated by open-source rivals like Meta Platforms and China’s DeepSeek, who recently made waves with claims of cutting-edge performance at a low cost, challenging the likes of ChatGPT creator OpenAI. In a bold move, Mistral unveiled an app named Le Chat, capable of generating responses to user queries at an impressive rate of 1,000 words per second.
Cerebras revealed that its cutting-edge computing power underpins Mistral’s achievement, positioning the European firm as the world’s leading AI assistant in terms of speed, surpassing the capabilities of OpenAI and DeepSeek. Based in Silicon Valley, Cerebras, which is currently awaiting regulatory approval for its delayed initial public offering due to G42’s involvement, stands as one of the few formidable rivals to Nvidia in AI model training. However, this particular collaboration with Mistral focuses on deploying an app based on its model to end-users, a crucial step known as “inference” in the AI sector.
With competitors coming closer to matching OpenAI’s models, the rapid delivery of accurate responses to users has emerged as a key priority in the industry. Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman emphasized the importance of improved answers and the necessity for enhanced computing power during inference to achieve this goal. He expressed pride in the partnership with Mistral, highlighting it as a significant milestone for Cerebras in collaborating with a top-tier model maker.
