Taming the Petunia Invasion in Your Yard!

Episode Summary: In this episode, Grumpy advises a reader on how to control the spread of Mexican petunias in their yard. He also discusses the Plant of the Week, the Persian Shield.

Question Of The Week: A reader asks for tips on getting rid of Mexican petunias that have spread uncontrollably in their yard. Grumpy explains that Mexican petunias, scientifically known as Ruellia simplex, are not the same as annual petunias. They are perennial plants with purple-blue flowers that can aggressively spread, especially the popular variety Purple Showers. Grumpy recommends using a herbicide containing triclopyr to effectively eliminate these plants.

Plant Of The Week: Grumpy highlights the Persian Shield, scientifically known as Strobilanthes dyerianus. This plant features striking oval pointed leaves with a metallic sheen, showcasing magenta, silver, green, and purple colors. While it thrives as a perennial in Zones 9 and 10, it can be grown as an annual in colder climates by bringing it indoors during winter. Grumpy suggests planting it in containers with other complementary plants and providing fertile, moist, well-drained soil with partial sun exposure.
