A police dog named Stark, who courageously survived a brutal machete attack and subsequently received a bravery award, has officially retired after serving six years on the force. Stark, a dedicated German shepherd, endured over 20 strikes from a machete while assisting police in responding to a burglary incident in 2020.
PC Paul Hopley, who has been Stark’s loyal handler throughout the entirety of the canine’s distinguished career, is also set to retire this year, and the inseparable duo will continue their companionship in retirement. PC Hopley expressed his deep bond with Stark, emphasizing the dog’s integral role within their family and eagerly anticipating the opportunity to spend more quality time together post-retirement. “Stark is very much part of our family, and I look forward to spending even more time with him when I retire,” remarked PC Hopley, adding, “He will be spoilt rotten!”
The harrowing incident unfolded in November 2020 at allotments in Handsworth, Birmingham, where Stark valiantly confronted an assailant following reports of a break-in. Despite sustaining severe injuries, Stark bravely detained the suspect until backup arrived. Subsequently, a 17-year-old perpetrator was handed a detention order in relation to the attack.
In recognition of their exceptional valor during the ordeal, Stark and PC Hopley received the prestigious Outstanding Bravery Award in 2021 from Thin Blue Paw, a charitable organization devoted to honoring police dogs for their remarkable acts of courage. West Midlands Police applauded Stark’s swift return to duty mere months after the traumatic incident, highlighting an instance where he successfully apprehended a wanted individual during his first shift back.
Reflecting on their shared experiences, PC Hopley expressed profound gratitude for his partnership with Stark, describing the profound bond they have cultivated over the years. “I couldn’t ask for a better dog to be partnered with. We have had many memorable moments over the years and developed such a special bond,” shared PC Hopley, underscoring the enduring camaraderie between himself and Stark.
As Stark embarks on a well-deserved retirement, the legacy of his unwavering dedication and courage continues to inspire admiration within the law enforcement community and beyond.
