Survey Shows President Trump Losing Support on Tariff Issue

A recent poll indicates that President Trump’s emphasis on imposing tariffs on a wide range of imports is unpopular with a majority of Americans, who believe he should prioritize lowering everyday prices instead. Despite concerns about tariffs, Trump’s overall approval rating stands at 50%, with strong backing for his immigration enforcement policies, as per a CBS/YouGov poll.

The survey also suggests that voters primarily attribute inflation to former President Joe Biden. However, 55% of respondents feel that Trump is overly focused on tariffs, while only 38% support his approach. In contrast, 64% believe he is not giving enough attention to reducing prices, compared to 31% who think he is addressing the issue adequately. The poll findings highlight that while Trump maintains a 50% approval rating, many voters are uneasy about his tariff strategy. Additionally, a majority of Americans (52%) disapprove of Trump’s economic management, a significant shift from previous approval ratings. Critics argue that tariffs could lead to increased prices on daily goods and services.

Despite these concerns, Trump has highlighted successes such as lowering egg prices. However, his implementation of broad tariffs on major trading partners, along with plans for additional tariffs, continues to spark debate over potential consequences. Critics fear a trade war and price surges, while Trump defends his protectionist measures as beneficial in the long run. The survey reveals a divide in assigning blame for high prices, with 38% holding Biden responsible, 34% pointing to Trump, and 19% undecided.

According to a CBS poll, Americans are divided on their approval of Trump’s policies, with higher favorability towards his immigration approach than his economic policies. Trump’s immigration policies have a 53% approval rating compared to 47% disapproval, while his economic policies received a 48% approval rating versus 52% disapproval. Additionally, his handling of inflation scored 44% approval and 56% disapproval. Trump campaigned on toughening immigration enforcement and has implemented measures targeting criminal organizations, such as deporting Venezuelan gang members using the Alien Enemies Act. Illegal border crossings have decreased significantly, with 29,000 encounters in February compared to 256,000 in February 2024, according to US Customs and Border Patrol data.

The poll also revealed that 58% of Americans approve of Trump’s deportation policies, while 42% disapprove. The CBS/YouGov poll surveyed 2,609 US adults on March 27 and 28, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.
