Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens clinched the women’s doubles title at Wimbledon on Sunday, marking Kudermetova’s first Grand Slam win. They staged a comeback on Centre Court, defeating Hsieh Su-Wei and Jelena Ostapenko 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Kudermetova and Mertens, who faced each other in the 2021 final, paired up this year for the first time at Wimbledon. Despite trailing 4-2 in the deciding set, they rallied to win the last four games and secure the victory.
This victory is Mertens’ fifth Grand Slam doubles title, with her second triumph at Wimbledon. Reflecting on her past loss in the final, Kudermetova expressed her determination to win this time, stating, “I really want it. And it’s mine now.” Hsieh, a four-time Wimbledon doubles champion with different partners, had previously triumphed with Mertens in a tense 2021 final against Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina. Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open singles champion, aimed for a second major doubles title following her U.S. Open win last year with Lyudmyla Kichenok.
