Vice President Kamala Harris, who was endorsed by Joe Biden after he withdrew from the election race, has also received great support from her village in India.

Harris' maternal grandparents hail from the village of Thulasendhrapuram, about 350 kilometers from Chennai, India.

The village center now proudly displays a large banner of the 59-year-old Harris.

Villagers are closely watching the US presidential race following Joe Biden's withdrawal and Harris' rise as a possible candidate.

"INDIANS LEAD POWERFUL NATIONS"

Krishnamurthi, one of the villagers interviewed by the BBC, said they were proud of Harris: "It is not an easy achievement to reach where he has reached in the most powerful country in the world. We are really proud of him. Once Indians were ruled by foreigners, now Indians are leading powerful nations."

Special prayers are offered to the local deity for his success - Harris and his maternal grandfather's names are on the list of donors to the village temple - and sweets are distributed.

WOMEN'S PRIDE

A sense of pride is also spreading, especially among women. They see Harris as one of their own, a symbol of what is possible for women everywhere.

"Everyone knows her, even the children, they call her 'my sister, my mother'," said Arulmozhi Sudhakar, the village's local government representative. We are happy that she has not forgotten her roots and we express our happiness."

After the 2020 elections, Kamala Harris became the first Asian and black female vice president in US history. Thulasendhrapuram celebrated the politician's success with ceremonies at the time.
