Suns Open to Trading Kevin Durant in Offseason!

The Phoenix Suns are gearing up for significant changes this offseason. On Monday, the team made a bold move by parting ways with head coach Mike Budenholzer, who had only been with the team for one season. Now, rumors suggest that another major shakeup could be on the horizon.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Suns are open to entertaining trade offers for superstar Kevin Durant. The team is said to be collaborating with Durant and his business partner, Rich Kleiman, to facilitate a move to a new team for the 15-time All-Star.

Despite turning 36, Durant showed no signs of slowing down during the Suns’ disappointing season. In 62 games, he maintained impressive averages of 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. However, even with Durant’s stellar performance, the Suns struggled, finishing with a lackluster 36-46 record despite also boasting talents like Bradley Beal and Devin Booker. Charania also reports that the Suns are exploring trade opportunities for Beal, but his no-trade clause could complicate matters.

Given Durant’s track record of success, including multiple All-NBA selections and NBA championships, he is expected to be in high demand as a trade asset. As Durant enters the final year of his four-year, $198 million contract extension signed with the Brooklyn Nets in 2021, teams will likely vie for the chance to acquire him.

The Suns’ intention to move Durant has been evident for some time. In fact, a potential trade with the Golden State Warriors was nearly finalized before Durant intervened, ultimately deciding to stay with Phoenix for the remainder of the season. Despite hopes for a second-half resurgence, the Suns failed to turn things around, leading to speculation about Durant’s future with the team.

Looking ahead, Durant is likely seeking a landing spot with a strong chance at a championship. While his past ties with the Warriors may reignite talks of a reunion, other contenders could also emerge as potential suitors for the seasoned star. Teams interested in Durant will need to weigh the cost of acquiring him against his age and contractual situation, with the hope that he can provide the missing piece needed for a championship run in the upcoming season.
