Sunday’s Severe Weather Risk Looms Large!

The severe weather system that has impacted various regions over the weekend is now moving towards the East Coast states, bringing a continued threat of severe thunderstorms. This system has already caused blizzard conditions in the northern Plains and flash flooding in the Tennessee Valley. As it progresses eastward on Sunday, over 10 states will be at risk for severe weather, with the potential for power outages, travel disruptions, downed trees, and flash flooding.

The severe weather outbreak began on Friday in the Mississippi Valley states, with reports of damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes in Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The system then moved eastward on Saturday, bringing more severe weather to the Tennessee Valley and eastern Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Tragically, at least 35 fatalities have been reported due to the devastating storms.

While the intensity of the severe weather may lessen by Sunday evening, there is still a risk of severe weather extending from Florida to New York state. Strong wind gusts, hail, and heavy rainfall will be the main threats as the storms move from the I-85 corridors to I-95. Tornadoes could also form within the strongest storms.

Widespread severe weather is not expected in New England on Sunday night, but heavy rain and strong winds could cause travel delays, power outages, and minor damage. The severe weather threat will diminish as a cold front associated with the storm moves off the Atlantic coast Sunday night into early Monday. Some thunderstorms may still occur in South Florida and the Keys on Monday.
