As a storm moves across the south-central and southeastern United States this weekend, AccuWeather meteorologists are warning of thunderstorms bringing strong winds, heavy rain, hail, and possible tornadoes. These storms are being fueled by warm, moist air from the Gulf, posing disruptions for travelers and outdoor activities, especially along the Interstate 10 corridor. Airport hubs in the region may experience ground stops, potentially causing missed connections.
The greatest risks from these storms are lightning strikes and torrential downpours, which can reduce visibility to near zero and lead to flash flooding. On Saturday, the most severe thunderstorms are expected in eastern Texas, Louisiana, southern Mississippi, southern Alabama, southwest Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle. The risk will shift eastward on Sunday, affecting the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, the northern part of the Florida Peninsula, and southern Georgia.
AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno warns that a few of the strongest thunderstorms could produce brief tornadoes. Areas north of the severe weather zone may still experience thunderstorms and periods of rain along portions of the Interstates 20 and 40 corridors.
