Martin condemned those who sent racist emails regarding the memorial. “It is extremely regrettable that we find ourselves at this juncture in our nation’s history where we are once again comfortable openly displaying our biases, racism, and simply vile, hateful sentiments,” she articulated during the meeting. Martin acknowledged that a park may not be the most suitable location for the memorial, suggesting that individuals may not wish to visit and be reminded of the tragic event. “Even when making such a statement, we must approach it with empathy and compassion,” she emphasized.
