NEW DELHI (AP) — Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, has inked deals with India’s top telecom operators to provide its services in the country. The agreements with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, major players in India’s telecom market, aim to expand internet access to millions in remote areas. However, Starlink’s entry into India is pending government approval.
The partnership with Reliance Jio allows Starlink to sell its equipment through Jio’s retail outlets nationwide, facilitating broader satellite coverage across India. Jio will also assist in the installation and activation of Starlink devices, complementing their broadband services.
While Starlink has faced challenges in meeting security norms and spectrum allocation requirements in India, reports suggest progress in regulatory approval. Pricing remains a hurdle, as India offers some of the world’s cheapest mobile data, posing a challenge for Starlink’s business model.
In addition to Starlink, Tesla, Musk’s electric car company, is expanding its presence in India, overcoming obstacles such as high import duties. These developments signal a potential boost for Musk’s ventures in the region, aiming to bring millions online in India’s underserved rural areas through innovative satellite technology.
