Southampton, England (AP) — Southampton avoided setting an unwanted Premier League record by drawing 0-0 with Manchester City on Saturday, surpassing the competition’s lowest ever points total. With Southampton now on 12 points, Derby County holds the record for the lowest single-season tally with 11 points from the 2007-08 season.
“It’s a relief to no longer hold that record,” Southampton defender Jack Stephens commented. “We’re still disappointed with how our season has gone. We know we haven’t performed at our best.”
Despite the disappointment of relegation being confirmed, Southampton has only managed to win two matches all season and is trailing next-to-last Leicester by nine points. The Saints will be remembered as one of the poorest-performing teams in the Premier League’s history since its establishment in 1992, although not the absolute worst.
“I’m pleased for the team and the supporters to have this positive result to celebrate,” added Stephens.
