University of South Carolina head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley has recently solidified her status as the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball. Following the approval of a contract extension by the school’s Board of Trustees, Staley is now set to remain with the team through the 2029-30 season.
The contract, which came into effect after the Board’s nod, features an annual base salary of $4 million, along with a generous $500,000 signing bonus and an annual $250,000 escalator. With these added incentives, Staley’s total compensation is estimated to be around $25.25 million. This substantial increase places Staley ahead of prominent women’s basketball coaches such as Kim Mulkey of Louisiana State University and Geno Auriemma of the University of Connecticut.
Previously earning an annual base salary of $3.1 million, as per a USA Today database, Staley’s new contract signifies recognition of her remarkable contributions to the University of South Carolina’s women’s basketball program. Since taking the reins as head coach in 2008, Staley has overseen a transformative period for the team, securing significant achievements including the program’s first conference title in 2014 and subsequent national titles in 2017 and 2022.
The team’s success reached new heights in 2024 when they clinched another national championship, culminating in a flawless 38-0 season, marking them as the 10th undefeated team in the history of women’s college basketball to achieve a perfect record.
