Soda Giants Fight for Sugary Drinks on SNAP!

NewsNation reported that under the potential leadership of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who is President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to oversee the Department of Health and Human Services, changes may be implemented to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Kennedy has expressed intentions to remove sugary drinks such as soda from the list of items eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits. This move is part of Kennedy’s broader initiative called “Make Americans Healthy.”

Notably, soft drink manufacturers have highlighted that they offer zero-sugar drink options and provide calorie information on their soda packages. The American Beverage Association argued against limitations on SNAP purchases, contending that such restrictions would not contribute to improving public health or saving taxpayer money. The Association maintained that limiting choices goes against the fundamental values of individual freedom and liberties in America.

Additionally, according to The Wall Street Journal, Coca-Cola is reportedly seeking to bolster its ties with the incoming Trump administration by increasing its lobbying efforts and making donations towards Trump’s inauguration. A spokesperson for Coca-Cola confirmed the accuracy of these reports.

In 2023, an average of 42.1 million individuals per month, approximately 12.6% of Americans, utilized SNAP benefits. The federal government allocated $112.8 billion for the program, providing nearly $212 per month to recipients.
