Sledgehammer Bill Senators Introduce Russia Sanctions for Trump to End War in Ukraine!

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal held a press conference in Kyiv, Ukraine on Friday, May 30, 2025. They are pushing for urgent action by the United States in response to Russia’s increasing aggression in Ukraine. The senators have introduced a bipartisan bill that proposes imposing sanctions on Moscow, which they believe could be a powerful tool for President Donald Trump to help end the conflict. The legislation includes provisions for the president to impose a 500% tariff on imports from countries that buy Russian uranium, gas, and oil.

During a recent appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Senator Graham emphasized the importance of the bill, stating that they have garnered support from 85 co-sponsors in the Senate. He highlighted the need for strong measures to target Putin’s economy and the countries supporting Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.

Following their visit to Rome, where they engaged in discussions on Ukraine’s recovery, Senators Graham and Blumenthal met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. They were informed by European allies that any potential US sanctions must be robust and impactful in order to induce behavioral changes.

Recent developments in the conflict include a significant drone attack by Russia on Ukraine, resulting in casualties. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has indicated the bill could be brought to the Senate floor by the end of the month, pending approval from President Trump. House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed readiness to advance a similar bill in the House if it passes the Senate.

While President Trump has not yet publicly endorsed the bill, there are signs of escalating US action against Russia, including plans to send weapons to Ukraine through NATO and a potential meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Senators Graham and Blumenthal anticipate that seized Russian assets may be utilized by NATO allies to assist Ukraine.

The senators emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to address the crisis in Ukraine and expressed confidence in President Trump’s forthcoming actions in support of NATO initiatives aimed at countering Russian aggression.

Blumenthal stated that Russia’s aggressive actions have prompted European countries to consider mobilizing their Russian assets, and he emphasized the need for the US to follow suit by allowing access to its $5 billion in seized assets. Graham pointed out that Putin underestimated NATO’s resolve and strength, and underscored the alliance’s commitment to prevent any forcible takeover of Ukraine. He highlighted the impending passage of a significant sanctions package by Congress, which will provide President Trump with additional tools to address the situation.
