A remarkable young woman has defied the odds and is celebrating what she calls a “miraculous” recovery after a harrowing skiing accident. Olivia Corbiere, 23, faced a life-threatening brain bleed, lung injuries, a fractured pelvis, and three broken vertebrae when she fell 15 feet into a ravine in Bansko, Bulgaria, during a ski trip in March 2024, as reported by news agency SWNS. Doctors initially gave Corbiere only a 5% chance of survival and warned her parents, Linzi and Sebastien Corbiere, that she might never speak again even if she did survive.
Corbiere, a kitchen designer from England, was on a spring ski vacation with close friends and her 19-year-old sister, Phoebe. The group set out for a day of skiing in the mountains, but tragedy struck shortly before lunch when Corbiere lost control on the slopes due to melting snow. Her right ski crossed over the left, causing her to tumble into the ravine.
Her friends sprang into action, with three of them jumping into the ravine to rescue her while the others called for help. Corbiere credits their quick thinking and bravery for saving her life. Rushed to the hospital, Corbiere underwent emergency surgery for her severe injuries, including a head injury unlike any the medics had seen before. She also suffered multiple fractures and required part of her skull to be removed during surgery.
Despite the grim prognosis and the long road to recovery predicted by doctors, Corbiere astonished everyone by making rapid progress. She began recalling memories just days after moving from intensive care to the neuro ward, surpassing expectations for her recovery. Though she still faces challenges such as hearing loss and nerve damage, her strides towards healing have been nothing short of miraculous.
Corbiere’s mother expressed immense gratitude for her daughter’s resilience and determination, emphasizing that her progress has been a source of joy and hope for the family. Corbiere has since returned home and is gradually regaining her strength, even enjoying meals out with her loved ones.
