The New York Jets have officially parted ways with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. After informing Rodgers weeks ago that they would be moving forward without him, the team made the release official on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET, marking the beginning of the new league year. At 41 years old, Rodgers will now enter free agency a year earlier than originally planned in his contract with the Jets.
To manage the financial impact, New York has designated Rodgers as a post-June 1 release, spreading out the $49 million in dead cap that they will need to absorb over the next two years. This designation does not restrict Rodgers from signing with a new team once free agency commences later on the same day.
Having played 20 seasons in the NFL, Rodgers joined the Jets in 2023 after spending the first 18 seasons of his career with the Packers. Despite a significant injury in his first game with the Jets in 2023, Rodgers bounced back in 2024 to lead the team to a 5-12 record, passing for 3,897 yards along with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Now, as he approaches his 42nd birthday, Rodgers enters the free agency market.
