Shocking Recall Rattles Pastry Industry

“The CDC reports that approximately 1,600 individuals contract listeriosis annually, resulting in around 260 fatalities,” stated the CDC. Those most vulnerable to listeria include “expectant mothers and their infants, seniors aged 65 and older, and individuals with compromised immune systems,” as noted by the agency. The CDC further mentioned that other demographics “seldom experience severe illness” upon exposure to listeria.

Unborn babies are particularly susceptible to the dangers of listeria, according to the CDC. “Contracting the infection during pregnancy leads to fetal loss in approximately 20% of cases and newborn fatality in around 3% of cases,” the agency highlighted. Listeria Monocytogenes has the potential to cause listeriosis, a life-threatening condition for certain populations.

A listeria outbreak in 2024 linked to a deli meat processing facility resulted in the deaths of nine individuals and numerous hospitalizations, as previously covered by FOX Business. The FDA’s website explains that a Class II recall stands as the second-highest level of recall classification.

Class II recalls are initiated when there is “a situation in which the use of, or exposure to, a non-compliant product could lead to temporary or reversible adverse health effects, or where the likelihood of severe adverse health consequences is minimal,” according to the FDA’s website. The FDA officially categorized the doughnut recall on February 5.

In contrast, a “Class I” recall represents the highest severity level. A Class I recall is designated for “a situation in which there is a high probability that the use of, or exposure to, a non-compliant product will result in severe adverse health effects or death,” as outlined by the FDA.
