Nearly 19,000 Pounds of Meat Recalled due to High Sodium Nitrite Levels

A recent recall alert has been issued for approximately 19,000 pounds of sausage, sliced meats, and poultry products from Smith Packing, LLC. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall on April 29, citing elevated sodium nitrite levels beyond the permissible limit.

The recall was prompted by consumer complaints received by Smith Packing regarding an unusual smell and taste in their products. Subsequent investigations confirmed the high sodium nitrite levels, prompting the company to notify the FSIS. Fortunately, there have been no reported adverse reactions thus far.

The recall impacts 16 products, including As-Salaam’s Beef Breakfast Sausage, Smith Packing’s Export Bologna, and Honest John’s Retail HJ Polish. The affected poultry items were distributed between February 19 and April 24, 2025, to various retail and institutional locations in New York. Consumers are advised to check for the establishment numbers “EST. 4578” or “P-4578” near the USDA inspection mark on the recalled items.

In collaboration with the USDA, Smith Packing has voluntarily recalled around 18,000 pounds of meat products under brand names such as Honest John’s, As-Salam, and Beefland. The primary distributor, Palmer Foods, mentioned that the majority of the affected products were still in the warehouse, with only a limited number reaching approximately 34 customers. Palmer Foods is actively working with these customers to retrieve and dispose of the potentially impacted goods.

If you have purchased any of the recalled items, it is recommended to discard them or return them to the store for a refund. While we all enjoy a delicious pastrami or deli sandwich, it is vital to prioritize food safety and avoid consuming compromised meat products.
