The New York City Health Department is raising concerns about the ongoing bird flu outbreak, particularly in relation to Savage Cat Food. Following the infection of three cats in the past two months, officials are advising cat owners not to feed their pets raw cat food from the company. The implicated lot number is 11152026.

Dr. Michelle Morse, Acting Commissioner of the NYC Health Department, issued a statement urging New Yorkers whose cats have fallen ill after consuming Savage Cat Food or other raw meat or dairy products to contact their veterinarian promptly.

Symptoms of bird flu in affected cats include fever, loss of appetite, and respiratory issues. Sadly, two cats succumbed to the virus, while a third cat survived after developing a fever post-consumption. Health officials are working closely with pet owners, veterinarians, and Savage Pet Food to address the situation.

Elsewhere, cases of bird flu have been reported in outdoor cats in New Jersey, prompting recalls of Wild Coast Raw food in Oregon and Washington. If you suspect your cat may be affected, seek veterinary assistance immediately and observe for symptoms such as lethargy, eye or nasal discharge, and neurological problems.

To reduce the risk of bird flu, refrain from feeding your cats raw food or unpasteurized dairy products. If you’re considering changing your cat’s diet, check out our guide to the best dry cat foods available.
