A man who struck his wife in the head with an ice axe has been sentenced to four years in prison. Daniel Christian Holden, 55, attacked his partner in Keswick, Cumbria, causing severe injuries that left her bleeding profusely and struggling to communicate. Holden admitted to law enforcement that he had intended to kill her and cited mental health issues as a contributing factor.
Initially facing charges of attempted murder, Holden ultimately pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and received his sentence at Carlisle Crown Court. The incident occurred on July 5th at the couple’s guesthouse, prompting a call to emergency services from Holden alerting them to the attack on his wife.
Reports revealed that a guest at the property had heard heated arguments leading up to the violent outburst, while a neighbor reported hearing shouting as well. When police arrived at the scene, Holden expressed concern that his wife’s condition was critical. As he was being taken into custody, he expressed remorse to his wife, acknowledging the consequences of his actions.
The victim recounted being lured into a bedroom by her husband before the assault took place. The brutal attack resulted in a fractured skull and brain injuries, though she has since recovered and is planning to resume her work as a therapist. Prior to the incident, Holden had exhibited signs of delusions and paranoia, coupled with anxiety over undisclosed health issues.
In her statement to the authorities, the victim mentioned her husband’s history of substance abuse and unemployment. Despite the severity of the attack, she emphasized her desire for him to receive professional help rather than face legal repercussions. The court disclosed that the victim had penned a letter to Holden, appealing for leniency.
Addressing Holden during sentencing, Judge Nicholas Barker acknowledged his remorse but highlighted the premeditated nature of the assault, attributing it to his mental state. The judge underscored that the attack was not a spontaneous act but rather a product of careful consideration. While expressing understanding for Holden’s regret, Judge Barker emphasized the gravity of his actions, marking them as a calculated event.
