A 3-year-old child was tragically stabbed to death by a babysitter while her father was at work, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The incident unfolded around 3:36 a.m. on Wednesday when the father called 911 to report the stabbing.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the young girl with stab wounds inside an apartment. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead after being rushed to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.
The babysitter, identified as 41-year-old Marketta Phillips, attempted to flee but was apprehended nearby and taken into custody. Phillips has been charged with open murder with a deadly weapon and is currently held at the Clark County Detention Center.
According to police, Phillips was babysitting the child while the father was at work. She allegedly stabbed the victim and fled when the father returned home.
Authorities have described the incident as isolated and are urging anyone with additional information to contact LVMPD’s Homicide Section. Phillips is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
