A suspect was taken into custody on Monday at UnitedHealthcare’s campus in Minnetonka, Minnesota, more than four months after the tragic shooting of the company’s CEO in New York City. The Minnetonka Police Department confirmed the presence of a significant number of officers at the United Healthcare campus in the Minneapolis suburb following the arrest of the suspect, who was apprehended without incident. Authorities stated that there is no threat to the public.
The arrest occurred nearly 19 weeks after CEO Brian Thompson of UnitedHealthcare was fatally shot outside a hotel in New York City. A nationwide manhunt concluded five days later with the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Mangione faces charges on both state and federal levels.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi has instructed prosecutors to pursue the death penalty against Mangione, a decision that defense lawyers criticized as a “political stunt.” Following the CEO’s tragic death, his wife Paulette Thompson revealed that her husband had received threats, although she was unsure of the details.
In a separate incident, U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy, R-N.C., condemned UnitedHealthcare for aggressively seeking repayment of loans provided to healthcare providers impacted by a cyberattack last year. The breach had caused delays or halts in payments to numerous medical providers, who had received interest-free loans from UnitedHealthcare to help them through the crisis. However, the company is now demanding immediate repayment of outstanding balances from these borrowers, prompting criticism from Rep. Murphy, who denounced these actions as detrimental to patient care and damaging to the company’s reputation.
Attempts to reach representatives of UnitedHealthcare, the largest private health insurer in the United States, for comment were unsuccessful.
