Shocker Peru Men’s National Soccer Team Coach Jorge Fossati Sacked!

LIMA, Peru (AP) — The Peruvian soccer federation announced on Thursday the departure of Jorge Fossati as the head coach of the men’s national team. The 72-year-old Uruguayan oversaw the team during World Cup qualifying, where they managed to secure only one victory out of six matches under his guidance.

Fossati’s exit from the coaching position was described as a result of a “mutual agreement” between him and the federation. As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding his replacement.

Currently, Peru finds itself in the 10th and final position in the South American qualifying standings for the 2026 World Cup, having accumulated a total of seven points. The competition in the region operates on a round-robin format, with the top six teams earning direct berths to the upcoming tournament to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The team finishing in seventh place will have the opportunity to compete in an international playoff for a chance to qualify.

Jorge Fossati took on the role of head coach in December 2023, succeeding Juan Reynoso. Prior to his time with Peru, Fossati had previously managed national teams such as Uruguay and Qatar, showcasing his experience at the international level. His coaching career also includes successful stints at club level, where he achieved numerous titles with esteemed clubs like Peñarol in Uruguay, Liga de Quito in Ecuador, Al Sadd in Qatar, and Cerro Porteño in Paraguay.
