Zverev of Germany, still chasing his first Grand Slam title, was defeated by France’s Arthur Rinderknech in an epic five-set battle that lasted four hours and forty minutes. The match was marked by a total of 56 aces, with Rinderknech ultimately prevailing 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4. Despite hitting 31 aces, Zverev fell short in the closely contested match.
On the other hand, Musetti, a former Wimbledon semifinalist, was ousted by qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia in four sets. Basilashvili secured his first victory over a Top 10 player in a Grand Slam amid scorching temperatures exceeding 91 degrees.
The upset trend continued as other top seeds like Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev were also eliminated in the opening round. Sinner, however, had a smooth victory over Luca Nardi, dispatching him 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 in just under two hours.
Additionally, Taylor Fritz staged a comeback from two sets down to overcome Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, while Ben Shelton secured a straight-sets win over Alex Bolt. Seeds Alex de Minaur, Tommy Paul, Jakub Mensik, and several others advanced to the next round with convincing performances.
