Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.), the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, expressed his concern that President Trump’s “America first” approach is isolating the country, transforming it into “America alone.” Warner appeared on CBS News’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday and when asked about the Trump administration’s aggressive stance against the Houthi Rebels in Yemen and its potential trade impact in the Red Sea, he stated, “I think we should take more decisive action. I believe the administration is on the right path.” Warner emphasized the importance of involving more allies in these actions, stating, “I would prefer to see our allies engaged. However, the shift from Trump’s ‘America first’ to ‘America alone’ is evident, but I do support the stronger approach in dealing with the Houthis.”
The recent military strike on the Houthis by the Trump administration gained attention when it was revealed that The Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg was included in a group chat discussing the operation. Warner criticized Trump administration officials for their handling of the messages during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, condemning their careless and incompetent behavior regarding classified information.
The messages also showed Vice President Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth disparaging Europe. Throughout his presidency, Trump has distanced the U.S. from key allies such as Canada and Mexico through tariffs. He has explored acquiring Greenland from Denmark, engaged in contentious interactions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and displayed a close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
