Senator Accuses Politicians of Deception Regarding Social Security

WASHINGTON — Senator John Curtis of Utah criticized politicians for being dishonest about their intentions with Social Security during an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday. He stated that when politicians claim they won’t make changes to Social Security, they are not being truthful.

Curtis’s remarks come as President Donald Trump has stated that his administration will not make any adjustments to Social Security, while concerns have been raised by town hall attendees about potential cuts to the program. Elon Musk, who has been leading efforts to reduce government spending, has also spoken out against Social Security, causing concerns among some of Trump’s supporters.

During the interview with moderator Kristen Welker, Curtis emphasized the need for honesty with the American people. He suggested that while current Social Security beneficiaries and those close to retirement should be protected, discussions should be held about the program’s future for younger generations who are further away from retirement.

Curtis plans to introduce a proposal to modify Social Security in the coming months, although details of the bill have not been disclosed by his spokesperson. Social Security, which includes retirement and disability benefits, is often considered a politically sensitive topic due to its popularity among the public.

The senator has been an advocate for Social Security reform and has urged GOP Senate leaders to consider changes to the program. Republicans have been focused on addressing the federal deficit and reducing government spending, with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) taking steps to streamline operations, including closing some Social Security offices.

When asked about Elon Musk’s role in recommending government cuts, Curtis clarified that Musk was offering suggestions, while President Trump ultimately made the decisions. Curtis also addressed comments made by Trump ally Steve Bannon regarding a potential third term for the president, stating that he does not support the idea.

The Trump administration is currently facing legal challenges related to deportation policies.

The seldom-used Alien Enemies Act came into focus when a judge instructed a government lawyer to advise his clients to return deportation planes back due to the act. However, it was later discovered that the planes had landed in El Salvador. The timing of the flights and the administration’s responses to the judge have become central themes in a prominent court battle. When questioned about the legality of the Trump administration’s actions, Curtis, while acknowledging he was not a lawyer, expressed faith in the judicial process, stating, “Let’s allow this to unfold. I believe in the court system’s ability to reach the correct resolution.”
