Senate Passes Historic Bill to Extend Social Security Benefits

The U.S. Senate passed legislation early Saturday to expand Social Security benefits to millions of Americans. The bill, known as the Social Security Fairness Act, will now go to President Biden for his expected signature. The Act, with a vote of 76-20, aims to eliminate federal policies that have prevented nearly 3 million people, including public servants like police officers, firefighters, teachers, and postal workers, from receiving their full Social Security benefits. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer hailed the bill as correcting a 50-year-old mistake. The passage of the legislation marks a significant victory for public service workers, ensuring they receive the benefits they deserve. Despite facing challenges and amendments, the bill ultimately made it through the Senate, with bipartisan support eroding due to concerns over its cost. If not approved by the Senate, the bill would have had to be reintroduced in the next congressional session.
