Tom Carper (D-Del.), the former Chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, is not planning to retire from working on climate-related issues despite leaving Congress. In an interview on his second-to-last day in the Senate, the 77-year-old expressed his commitment to ensuring a sustainable planet for future generations. He voiced concerns about the incoming Trump administration’s potential rollback of climate regulations, particularly criticizing plans to weaken electric vehicle standards.
Carper, who has served in the Senate since 2001 and worked closely with President-elect Joe Biden during his tenure, emphasized the importance of market forces in advancing climate change solutions. He played a key role in legislative efforts under the Biden administration, including the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Although known as a moderate Democrat, Carper has taken stances independent of his party, such as voting against a $15 minimum wage increase in 2021. He highlighted the need to promote workforce development and empower individuals to contribute meaningfully to society.
Drawing inspiration from his friendship with Senator John Kennedy (R-La.), Carper stressed the personal connections that drive successful climate action partnerships. Looking ahead, he envisions a future career focused on the intersection of climate change and job creation to benefit younger generations.
While Carper’s post-Congress plans are still taking shape, he remains optimistic about potential opportunities in the private sector that align with his passion for addressing climate challenges and supporting economic growth.
